Backpack capacity is useful only when it matches the job. A 25-litre pack and an 80-litre field backpack can both be good choices, but they solve very different carrying problems. Choosing by the largest number usually means carrying unnecessary weight and bulk; choosing too small often means attaching loose items outside the pack or leaving useful equipment behind.

When a 25L backpack makes sense
A pack in the 20–30 L range is usually the more efficient choice when most of the load consists of a laptop, water, a light layer, small pouches and everyday essentials. It stays easier to handle in a car, train or office and makes overpacking less tempting.
The NOEL Cliff 25 L Backpack is a useful example. It uses Cordura, includes a padded laptop pocket for devices up to 17 inches, internal organization and a large front pocket. That makes it closer to a robust daypack than a large expedition pack.
When an 80L field backpack makes sense
An 80 L main compartment becomes useful when the load includes bulky clothing, sleeping equipment, larger weather layers or shared gear. At that point, the carrying system matters as much as the nominal volume. Look for a padded back, shoulder straps and hip support, then check how frequently used items can be separated from the main load.
The Galvi-Linda 114-070-03 80 L field backpack has an 80 L main compartment, detachable side pockets, a separate lower compartment and MOLLE webbing. Those features matter when the pack has to manage more than one type of equipment.
Do not choose capacity in isolation
Two backpacks with the same stated volume can feel very different. Check the dimensions, opening style, internal compartments, external attachment points, back structure and the equipment you actually intend to carry. Laptop fit may matter for everyday travel; hydration compatibility and MOLLE attachment may matter more in field use.
A simple packing test
- Put the actual equipment for the intended trip in one place.
- Separate must-carry items from optional items.
- Estimate which items are bulky rather than heavy.
- Choose a pack that fits the real load without requiring every external attachment point.
- Leave some usable space for a weather layer or items added during the day.
Which should you choose?
Choose around 25 L when mobility and compact daily carry matter more than maximum volume. Choose around 80 L when the task genuinely requires a large, organized field load and you are prepared for the extra size. If you sit between those extremes, a medium backpack is usually more useful than forcing either end of the range.
